As we watch so much of the progress we’ve made in diversity and inclusion as a society continue to be trashed by the current administration it is more important than ever that we take it upon ourselves (I’m looking at you white, heterosexual, cis-gendered folks) to celebrate and amplify diversity in every way that we can. Whether the federal government chooses to recognize it or not it is Black History Month. I’ll be following my personal tradition of making an effort to read books by Black authors though it’s of course important to remember that we can’t just celebrate diversity one month of the year. If you’re already someone who reads books with a lot of author diversity then another good option is to check out some new nonfiction books on topics like anti-racism.
When I sat down to think about what I could write to bring Black authorship to the forefront here it occurred to me that I’m not qualified to speak on the experiences of being a Black author. Maybe once my blog has a bit more of an audience I’ll be able to feature a guest author who could share more about their experiences in this regard. For now, this will stick to being a resource post. If you follow me on social media you’ll see me post some of my favorite reads by Black authors within a number of different genres. Below, you’ll find a roundup of the best lists, suggestions, and more that I could come up with but feel free to leave your own in the comments below! Integrating African American Authors into Your Curriculum – Great list of books YA books by Black authors, organized by grade.
American Fiction Classics by Black Authors – This is a great list featuring books you maybe missed while you were reading The Great Gatsby. Disappointing to see how many I haven’t read.
20 Classic Books by Black Authors – Some crossover with the previous list, but this one includes a few others that I think are important.
For Anti-Racist Education
